Relieve pain and promote physical and emotional health and wellbeing with acupuncture, an ancient natural healing technique.
Acupuncture is a natural healing technique that originated in ancient China more than 2,000 years ago. Today, acupuncture is successful in treating a range of physical and emotional conditions from headaches and migraines to chronic pain, fertility and digestive issues. An acupuncturist uses hair-thin needles to access acupuncture points on the body. This specialised technique stimulates the central nervous system to positively affect energy, the body’s natural healing ability and the organ system.
Acupuncture is commonly used to relieve stress, chronic pain, arthritis, headaches and migraines, back pain, and neck and shoulder pain. Acupuncture is also used to treat insomnia, pain and/or issues relating to digestion, reproduction, menstrual cramps, fibromyalgia, muscle cramping, sciatica, sinusitis, asthma and allergies.
It’s best to wear comfortable clothes and eat something light about 30-60 minutes before your session. Before treatment begins, your therapist will ask about your health, diet and lifestyle as well as take your pulse and possibly look at your tongue for diagnostic purposes.
During your acupuncture session, because acupuncture points are all over the body, only the areas being treated during the session will be exposed and worked on. It’s best to wear clothes that can easily be rolled up to the elbows and knees with easy access to the abdomen. Your session may include a mix of modalities such as acupuncture, cupping, Gua Sha and moxibustion depending on your treatment plan. Needles are generally left in for 30 minutes where you will be left to rest while the needles do their work. If you experience any discomfort, pain, or anxiety, please let your practitioner know.
After your session your therapist will recommend how many further sessions are needed. In general, 4 consecutive weekly sessions are a good starting point to treat a condition. Then, a session every 3 to 4 weeks is recommended. To maximise the results of your acupuncture treatment, try to relax for a couple of hours after each session and stay hydrated to further reap the benefits.
