Myofascial Dry Needling

Treat pain, improve flexibility, and help your body heal by easing trigger points using myofascial dry needling, often part of an integrated treatment plan.

What is Myofascial Dry Needling?

Myofascial dry needling (MDN) is a specialised technique that uses a needle, similar to those used in acupuncture, applied to the muscular system to deactivate myofascial trigger points. These points may produce local tenderness, referred pain or a local twitch response. This in turn will decrease the associated referred pain, promoting pain relief and also stimulating the production of endorphins.

Dry needling should not be confused with acupuncture as these treatments are distinctly different. Myofascial dry needling uses points that are based on western anatomy and physiology, while acupuncture is based on oriental practices using points along meridians in the body or their energy channels.

The Benefits of Myofascial Dry Needling

Myofascial dry needling may provide relief for some muscular pain and stiffness. In addition, easing the trigger points may improve flexibility and increase range of motion. That's why this method is often used to treat sports injuries and muscle pain, speeding up recovery.

What Happens During the Treatment?

Before commencing treatment your trained therapist will get a full understanding of your medical history and your specific requirements. Dry needling is often not used in isolation but as part of a more comprehensive integrated treatment using other techniques. In your treatment, needles may be placed deeply or shallowly, for short or long periods of time, depending on the type of pain being treated. When the needle is inserted, a ‘twitch’ often occurs, an indication that the treatment will be helpful.
